Our Story Begins with One Dog

About Us

As many of our past customers know our line began back in the 90’s with just one dog, Molly McButter. While Molly McButter started it all off for us in the world of Labrador Retrievers, owner Steve, had been working with and breeding sports dogs most of his adult life. His parents were owners and breeders of Pointers and then later Brittany Spaniels.

Molly McButter was mother to our beloved Millie McButter who helped us foster a great relationship and mentorship with Paul and Sandra MacLean of Ocean Spray Labradors. It has been with their help that we have created the line of Labradors our customers have come to know, love, and come back for more.

We strive everyday to make sure that our dogs are provided with a full life. This is why we limit the number of mothers we keep, and the number of litters they have each year. We believe that a dog is not just a present for a birthday or something to surprise your children under the tree, but a member of your family who you will love and care for until it is time to say goodbye. We are completing medical testing to ensure that our mothers are in the best health possible.

Here at Canal Labradors we have a code of ethics that is as follows: To maintain the original purpose of the Labrador Retriever as a retriever, we breed only from the sound dogs that exemplify the breed standard and are able to represent the breed, in the field as a willing worker, and/or as a hunting companion. We breed only stock that must be x-rayed clear of hipdysphasia and certified OFA and opthamologically examined and certified clear of hereditary eye disease by an authorized veterinary opthamologist. Canal Labradors uses sound breeding stock to lessen the occurrence of defects judged to be hereditary. While it is not possible to "guarantee" your dog will be free of genetic defects, we do guarantee that both parents are certified free from hip-dysphasia and hereditary eye diseases at the time of breeding.

Handled with Care

Our Babies

From the day our babies are born until the day they leave our house our babies are handled with love and care by every member of our family including our grandchildren and they are used to being hugged and snuggled. Our babies visit with our veterinarian, Dr. Steve Cloutman, of Manomet Animal Hospital at around 6 weeks where they are given their first set of shots and have their health checked. Our babies leave us at 8 weeks old to go to their new "fur"ever homes and families with a copy of their shot records, and AKC paperwork so you may register your dog with a limited registration.

Making the Best Better

Our Commitment to Children and Dogs

Canal Labradors has been working with children and the Massachusetts 4H Program for twenty years and across two counties. Steve partnered with the Barnstable County 4H Program with his daughter Tara when she was 14 years old until his son aged out of the program in 2012. Steve has helped to provide loaner dogs for many children who want to be part of the program but don't own a dog of their own and was often a volunteer during the state's two day Dog Camp Weekend helping children unload their bags, settle into their cabins for the weekend, and then teaching them Rally-O during training sessions. Today Steve, his daughter Tara, and his three grandsons participate in the Plymouth County 4H program training their dogs. Steve's grandsons have even used their entrepreneurial skills to open their own dog biscuit business which they developed a sunbutter dog biscuit that they sell to benefit their county's 4H Advisory Board.
